Trying to find a safe place to eat when you have allergies can definitely be one of the more daunting challenges. When so much of what you can't eat are common staples like dairy, eggs, wheat and soy, it's far too easy to assume that you can't eat out anywhere. In some cases, that may very well be true, but in other cases, it could mean that you might be missing out on some wonderful allergy-friendly foods and excellent places that can cater for your needs. Establishment: Gardener's Lodge, Victoria Park Cuisine: Plant based cafe and vegan cheese deli Allergy information: they offer an amazing range of dairy, egg, seafood and some nut free dishes, though do note that their vegan cheeses are either almond or cashew based so unsafe for people with those nut allergies and they do use soy Suggestions: Absolutely recommend the lasagne - amazing!! Post #2 - 𝘎𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘒𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘯, 𝘎𝘭𝘦𝘣𝘦 🙌 Another sad farewell in Glebe, this time for the first ever place I posted about here on the blog. The folks at Gathered Kitchen   recently announced that their last day of service would be Monday, August 5, inviting us all to enjoy their last weekend open so my friend and I headed over there today to do just that. After usually heading for the amazing dairy and egg free (and often nut free!) pastries and sweet treats on offer at the front counter, I finally tried the famous Gathered Bowl. Establishment: The Greenhouse at Centennial Park Cuisine: Middle Eastern inspired Allergy: they have some nice options which are dairy, egg, seafood and sesame free Suggestions: the shredded chicken wrap sans the aioli and with some fries makes for a lovely lunch in the park Unless you are a frequent visitor to the beautiful grounds at Centennial Park, or perhaps a local from the area, you might not know about this small but popular spot just past the Ash Paddock and next to the Fearnley grounds. While often being comfortable little spots to catch up with friends with a tea and enjoy something light to munch on, cafes can still prove difficult places to find allergy safe food. Smaller and simpler menus can mean a tad less variety, leaving little room for those people who are badly allergic to a lot of common food staples, such as milk, eggs, butter and wheat. Establishment: Caffe Cherry Beans Cuisine: Cafe, all day breakfast Allergy Information: Some dishes are dairy, egg, seafood and nut free or can be made vegan Suggestions: the BLAT, without aioli, with the herby fries or the garnish salad (it's simple, but the balsamic glaze is lovely) I don't generally eat at a lot of cafes. Perhaps on occasion, I'll grab a tea or a cold drink with a friend but for the most part, I don't usually find it that easy to find allergy-safe foods at cafes. Of course, that tends to mean that if you're in shopping centres or out and about, your main options are fast food or restaurants. Minus places like cafes, which tend to serve that bit more lightly and quickly than if you decide to sit down in a restaurant, you don't have much of a happy medium. Wonderful surprise discoveries while travelling with allergies! Find #2 - Green and Pleasant Tearooms , Bourton-on-the-Water, Cheltenham, UK   I originally posted about this last May, while I was on holiday in the UK, in a blog entitled, 'How living with food allergies can be a most wonderful thing...' and I really meant that title. For all the difficulties that food or any other allergies can cause, the experience teaches you a great deal and it's impossible not to develop an appreciation for so many things, and for all the people who have actively tried to open up different foods for people and allow them to experience something that so many others never have to think twice about. I'm absolutely not saying that people without allergies necessarily take food for granted, but when you're forced to watch out for everything, it gives you a unique opportunity to experience and really savour firsts that others will have long forgotten... and those moments ...

Wonderful surprise discoveries while travelling with allergies! Find #1 - Apfelkern Und Kolibri , Bad Homburg, Germany It's been a long few years since my excellent friend, Colleen, and I finally found this place after getting lost amidst the picturesque maze of houses, just off of Bad Homburg's main shopping street, Louisenstraße. She had looked up whether this beautiful city had any allergy-safe dining fare for my visit and found this quaint looking cafe offering a fully vegan menu.  Thankfully, we eventually found the place (it took a while, Google maps being particularly unhelpful!) and it was easily one of the cutest places I'd ever eaten. Post #1 -  WellCo Cafe, Glebe A tribute to the place that served me my first allergy-safe brownie, along with one of the tastiest vegan green salads I've ever had and that became one of my favourite haunts till it had to go - Well Co cafe on Glebe Point Road 🙌 This place was a gem. Sure, it wasn't perfect or polished or slick. The tables and chairs were worn and the interior could be dark and pokey but what did it matter when you and your friends were huddled around a table having a good gab or listening to the jazz bands that used to play by the stairs? Simple, it just didn't. Friends and I could sit there, chatting and nursing our sweet treats and tea for hours. Living with allergies, suggestions from family and friends have become a great way to discover new foods or places to eat out, especially in the last decade or so.
